History

This Chapter was chartered on June 28, 2001 by Eldson J. McGhee, he wrote all of the Chapter’s infra-contractures, programs, agendas, and started its operations from his home at 555 Ontario Avenue SW, Atlanta, Georgia. 30310.

Robert L. Davis was installed as the Chapter’s first president, but resigned in April of 2002.

Eldson J. McGhee, the Chapter’s founder, was installed as the Chapter’s second president in April 2002, to complete Davis’s term.    Under his leadership, the Chapter established the Metro-Atlanta Veterans Service Center, and was selected VVA Georgia State Council’s Chapter of the Year twice in both 2003 and 2004. He was selected as VVA Georgia State Council’s 2003 3 Member of the Year. Although he was ill when taking leadership, VVA Chapter No. 883 became a leading voice for veteran’s issues in Metro-Atlanta, and that’s where it stands today. Due to his illness, he declined to seek re-election in April of 2006, but remains as the Chapter’s only service representative to this present day.

Paul Wheeler was installed as the Chapter’s third president in April of 2006, but resigned in 2007.

Vesta Jean Oliver was installed as the Chapter’s fourth, and first female, president in 2007 to complete Paul Wheeler’s term. She was re-elected in 2008. Under her leadership, the Chapter has begun to re-surface as a force to veterans’ issues. She is the Chapter’s current president.

During its existence, the Chapter has assisted over 70 veterans in securing their disability benefits, helped Hundreds with employment, and distributed over a Half a Million Dollars in clothes and household goods to needy veterans and their families in Metro-Atlanta. Our intent and determination is to keep our service going...
